Trayce Thompson, the younger brother of Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson, was a godsend for a Los Angeles Dodgers team that was surprising lacking in the outfield a year ago. On June 20, Thompson was gained from the Detroit Tigers in a money exchange. He hit.268/.364/.537 with 13 home runs in the next 74 games. It was without a doubt his most successful MLB season.
The Dodgers felt confident not tendering Cody Bellinger during the summer and instead starting Thompson in center field most of the time due to his excellent performance in the previous season. On Saturday, Thompson got his first start of the new season, and it was the first MLB game with three home runs. Thompson quickly eliminated Madison Bumgarner from the game with a grand slam in the first inning on Saturday. He then hit a single shot off Carlos Vargas in the eighth inning and a three-run home run off Kevin Ginkel in the fifth inning, respectively. Thompson struck out in the third inning as well.
Just four different players have numerous grand slams in a game this year: Mitch Garver, a designated hitter for the Texas Rangers, first baseman C.J. Cron and Thompson are currently tied for first place in the MLB with three home runs each.
Thompson is the eighth Dodgers player in franchise history to record eight RBIs in a game. Only Gil Hodges, a Hall of Famer, and James Loney, a Dodger, have scored more runs while wearing the team's uniform. Loney and Hodges both had nine RBI in games.
The Dodgers' final three-homer game came in 2020 when Mookie Betts hit three for them against the San Diego Padres.
